Locals- SouthWest MTB film and Photos

by Jacob Gibbins

Locals, A short free online film about a few of South West England's best up and coming riders...

Locals started off as a series of web edits of all the local pinners from around my area...I soon realized that there was too many of them and if I did them as web edits you would be plagued with them for close to a year.

Instead I thought I'd would make a short free online film about them. For the trailer, full film and photo gallery then click for more!

Luke Ball riding at Gawton

First off a bit about all this-

What is locals then?
Well the the blurb about locals says: A short free to view online film about a select few of South West England's best up and coming riders. Which just about sums up what it's about...

Why the South West, it's not known for its hills?
I've lived in the South West for the past 10 years and have seen the tracks and scene here grow, seen the riders get better, start racing and start to get results that reflect how hard they ride on their local tracks week in week out. And we have got some big hills(valleys) here and some amazing tracks such as Gawton so there is plenty to see/ride.

Why did you decide to make a film?
As I said all the riders down here are pinners so thought they all needed to get their names out there, put that with the fact that I have in the last year started making videos and wanted to make something a little more substantial than a 3 Min web edit and you have the reason and driving force behind locals. Up till now I have only focused on the still image and have only marketed that side of my work, this is also a great way to show people all over the world that I can work with both stills and video to a high standard. To me it was part of the challenge of trying something new, learning a lot along the way, getting all the people I know the recognition they deserve for how hard they ride, also with my summer seasons full of stills work all over the place, the winter is the main time I can concentrate on personal projects and this video falls in to that category and it's a big advert for me that says - "I now shoot video to!"

What have you got planned next season, more videos?
This season is getting busier each week for me with photographing the World cups, British national series, personal shoots, photographing on film shoots with my mate who's the main man behind footoutflatout2 etc. But I'm also doing a good few web videos for some people which you will see about this year. So with all that I won't get much time to work on personal videos as I'll be doing stills/film work for lots of people all summer. But I'm planning a few things for next year's off season, but as it's so far away and I have so much to do till then, they are just ideas at the moment and nothing more.

What's your filming style?
I would say my filming style is very time consuming and still photography like(not surprising considering my tools) but I like it this way. People keep saying to me you should get a proper camera and do more videos, but I don't want a traditional video camera for a few reasons:

1: I'm first and foremost a still photographer, video is just another string to my bow.

2: I love the footage you get with the new HDSLRS, the Depth of field, different lenses, low light work, colours, it's much nicer footage than you get right now from most normal video cameras without 35mm adapters etc.

What camera gear do you use to shoot photos/videos?
The only camera body I have at the moment is a Nikon D90 so that's what everything I shoot is shot on. It is a good amateur camera. 12mp 720 HD video. It has its limits but as long as you learn them and stick within them it can produce some good stuff.

What do you like to depict when you take video?
The feeling of the day really, the mood on the shoot, the mood of the rider/s, weather, setting. I try to give the viewer an insight to the day not just clips of guys sending fat gaps for 5 Mins non stop.

Sponsor shout outs?
A big thanks to Wideopen Mag for helping me out, Juice lubes for making amazing bike lubes, MTB-cut, The British downhill series and Pinkbike for this article.

How can people get hold of you?
If you want me to do any still or video work for you, your company etc don't hesitate to go on my website www.JacobGibbins.co.uk and email me.

The film
This is a short film that follows a few of the South West's best through a regular day riding their local tracks, on their own, with a mate, downhill, skate park, trails, BMX, big wheels. A bit of everything...

yea thank you... the problem is people dont open their mind up and look at other sports for ideas and in the long run its actually gona make u better at filming or taking photos if u go out and get a different perspective and new ideas.

Slick looking photos and cool to see more free content getting onto the web Smile Nice riding and mint scenery too.

Can the D90 lock off the iris or exposure when it shoots video? You can see the exposure clicking up and down during some of the shots.

flag ingvaro (Jan 23, 2010 at 2:29)
The D90 can't lock those at the same time, no manual exposure Wink

But the Canon 7D can do it Wink

seriously good video... if you're young and it's your first video than i say excellent! all those kids can seriously corner and the last kid was the most fun to watch. and the platform (internet and free) you chose to debut you short movie was a solid choice..

keep it up.. with freecaster and vitalmtb.. i'm really excited about our sport getting this type of exposure.. don't worry about the haters..! those guys are douchebags..

all the time. and when i am shooting stills the rider will do something and i think SHIT with i had the dolly and video tripod and stuff...

but i have to make a choice to do one or the other.

as im only 1 person if i try to do both at the same time both suffer.

so on an average shoot i will start with film and shoot that for 5 hours or so, then spend an hour or so just getting stills.

yeh you can lock the exposure on it but some shots that would mean half the shot being to dark to see...

and look on my photos on my user, LOADS of much less altered images

Why do people always have to put same songs to every movie ?
I don't get it, you probably don't even have copyrights to those songs so whats the deal, don't you people have taste of your own. For me it kind of ruins a good bikemovie if almost every song is taken from another movie.

Most of the songs were remixed from songs that i've heard in riding edits like 1000 times, i'm not saying that the riding or editing was bad, maybe just little bit unoriginal, but whatever keep riding and having fun thats all that really matters. And I don't do filming or editing like for real, so its not that hard to do better than me Big Grin

peace Smile
